How Happy Will Meeting Adam Sandler Make You?

Thirty years after the movie that changed his life, one millennial finally gets Happy's autograph.

Millennials, can we all agree that the man of our youth is Adam Sandler? The guy was constantly on the big screen when I was a teenager in the mid-to-late 90s. Billy Madison, Airheads, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, The Waterboy, and of course, Happy Gilmore. Just seeing his face fills me with so much nostalgia. Now imagine what seeing him in real life will do.

Having lived in Los Angeles since 2010, I've actually seen Adam Sandler in person multiple times, but never really met him. The first time I was up close and personal with him was at the Happy Gilmore 2 premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City. Yes, I traveled all the way to the East Coast to see him.

Can you blame me? After years of almost bumping into Adam Sandler but never really meeting him, this was finally my chance to actually interact with him. I was determined to get his autograph on my Happy Gilmore poster.

The movie is also one of my favorites. I'll never forget seeing it at the local AMC with my buddies right after class. One of my friends brought his next-door neighbor, a beautiful girl who eventually became my wife. So you could say that Happy Gilmore changed my life in more ways than one.

I even brought my wife with me to the premiere in New York City. We made it a date night, and somewhat of an anniversary thing for the first day we met, even though it was on a totally different date.

That night felt like a reunion of sorts for both of us who loved the movie. Many of the original cast returned for the sequel, including Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Kevin Nealon, and almost all of them were there at the premiere.

Even Ben Stiller showed up, though he was the one that got away from us. We never managed to catch him before he headed inside, so his autograph isn't on our poster. We were pretty bummed, but it was fine. My wife and I consoled ourselves that we at least saw the man behind Severance, which we also love, in the flesh.

In any case, finally meeting Adam Sandler was the highlight of my night. The guy barely changed from the 90s. While my wife and I got a few more wrinkles, he barely had any. And after he signed our Happy Gilmore poster, he posed for a selfie with my wife, and it made her entire year. She kept showing it and bragging about it to our friends and neighbors afterward.

Like Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Kevin Nealon still looked the same as they did in 1996. They could've re-shot the entire movie in 2025, and I wouldn't have known the difference. Hollywood really has spooky magic to it. Most celebrities barely age, even decades later.

All three also signed our poster and took selfies with my wife. I played photographer for her every time since I'm not the type to show off my face on social media. It was enough for me to meet them in person and get their autographs.

For my fellow older millennials out there, I'm happy to report that meeting Adam Sandler did make me happy. It was the best experience ever, and the guy is still as cool and funny today as he was when we were all younger.
