I Found The Lost Boys Again

A flight to Manchester, five vampires in one room, and a Halloween tradition finally signed.

Anybody remember The Lost Boys? Is this movie lost in the past forever? I hope not!

I know people might not remember it, but The Lost Boys is one of the best horror-comedies to ever come out of Hollywood. I've yet to see another film that could make me scream and laugh my lungs out in equal measure. Is there a movie like that nowadays? Or even in the past few decades?

I'm glad my cinephile dad influenced me to watch as many movies as I could when I was younger. In fact, he was the one who first showed me this movie. I had just moved out of their place, and he helped me buy furniture. While we were at a flea market, he spotted a couple of DVDs, including The Lost Boys, and told me that it was one of his favorite movies.

Intrigued, I bought said DVD and watched it on my first weekend in my new place. Needless to say, I fell in love with it, too. I even made it a Halloween tradition to watch it every October 31st, and no matter how often I've seen it, I scream and laugh every time.

When I heard that the cast would reunite at the For the Love of Horror convention in the UK, I knew this was my chance to see them together again in real life. So I packed up a suitcase, booked a flight, and made my way to Manchester. It was a long way to get there, but the reunion made it all worth it.

It was trippy to see Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Billy Wirth, Jamison Newlander, and Tim Cappello together in person. I've seen these men again and again for years, but it was the first time I saw them in real life. Overwhelmed doesn't even begin to describe how I felt.

What I loved most about that night, besides getting their autographs, was listening to them talk about the film. I got the sense that they loved it and loved making it, and I appreciated that they still remembered it after all these years. Kiefer Sutherland, for instance, went on to make bigger things like his hit show, 24, yet he still showed up to celebrate this movie.

I also loved how packed the place was. I always thought that I was the only one who knew and loved The Lost Boys. As much as I tried to make my friends like it, they never shared my enthusiasm. I barely even got my friend to join me on this trip. I had to bribe him with cash to come along.

The cast wasn’t complete. Corey Feldman and Dianne Wiest weren't there, but it didn't take anything away from how much I enjoyed it. I eventually met them elsewhere, like at conventions and movie premieres, so their absence barely mattered.

Years later, I'm still watching The Lost Boys every Halloween. I'll never get tired of this film, especially now that I have an autographed poster signed by the actual cast. I hope more cinephiles discover this gem of a movie, too.
