The Dark Knight Descends Upon New York City

Gotham comes home: one night at Lincoln Square with Nolan's cast.

I know people are probably sick and tired of superhero movies right now, but allow me to talk about one of my favorites: The Dark Knight. I seriously consider it the best superhero movie ever, way above anything the MCU or even the DCEU has made. I even think it deserved to have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Christopher Nolan really popped off here. He got the best cast, co-wrote the best script, and directed the best scenes of any superhero movie. I know a lot of people think it was too dark or serious, but that was the best part. I like my fair share of family-friendly flicks as much as the next guy, but I like my superheroes with a bit more grit to them.

The trailers alone told me that The Dark Knight was going to be phenomenal, which is why I went to the movie premiere. They held it at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square in New York City, the perfect city to host Gotham.

I went for two reasons. The first is to get to see the movie as soon as I can. I wasn't gonna wait days or weeks to watch this film! Since the premiere was held in my hometown, I might as well go and be one of the first to see it.

The second is that I wanted to get the cast's autographs. I'd been dabbling in autograph-hounding in the past, but when Heath Ledger sadly passed away earlier that year, something compelled me to get back into it, especially for this cast and for this movie.

Heath Ledger is still “the one who got away” for me. I've had countless chances to get his autograph, but for some reason or another, I never got it. When I heard he was gonna star in this film, I really thought this was finally the time that I'd get it, but as everyone knows, fate told a different story.

Despite this tragedy looming in the air, the Dark Knight premiere was still a pretty happy affair. The cast and Christopher Nolan seemed excited to show the movie, as if they already knew it was going to be the hit it became. They were right, but it still stood out to me how confidently they stood in front of the public and posed for the cameras.

Fortunately, this was exactly the energy I wanted in the celebrities I planned on getting autographs from. Because they were (or at least seemed) in a good mood, it was easy to ask them to sign my movie poster. Christian Bale, who I always thought was a temperamental fellow even before his controversial leaked rant, was all smiles as he interacted with fans.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was always a sweetheart, so it was no surprise how easily I got her autograph. And Gary Oldman didn't have his white hair yet, so it's funny looking back and seeing him so young and excited. He was a pretty fun interaction, too.

If you ask me who I was most excited to meet that night, however, it'd be Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. These two were already legends at that point, and I had been a fan of theirs for years. It was crazy that it was the first time I met both of them, despite autograph-hounding for years. Finally, I got these icons to sign something of mine, and it was one of my proudest moments.

Though I got most of the cast to sign my movie poster, it still pains me that Heath Ledger wasn't one of them. He's undeniably the best part of the movie, and maybe I'm alone in this, but he also gave the best performance in any Nolan film before or since. How I wish I got his autograph on this poster too.
