The Best Time at Lebowski Fest

One night, five signatures, and a voice lost entirely in a good cause.

Have any of you been to Lebowski Fest? It's an annual event that gathers the biggest fans of the 1998 cult classic, The Big Lebowski. People go dressed in “The Dude” cosplay to watch the movie, go bowling, drink White Russians, and more. I've been to it a couple of times myself, and the best year was 2011.

2011 was the year when the main cast went to the event. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro all appeared, making it the biggest cast turnout the festival has ever had. Bridges, the movie's lead star and whose character inspired the entire festival, had already gone a couple of times, but it was the first time the other actors joined him.

It was an exciting time, to say the least. I'll never forget how loud the crowd got as each cast member went on stage. The reunion was announced beforehand, so it wasn't some big surprise, but many people still doubted they'd actually show up. So when they did, they were met with raucous applause.

I remember losing my voice screaming when each cast member went out. And as one followed the other, my voice got louder and louder. I ended up getting laryngitis literally the next day, but I didn't care. That night was the best time I ever had at Lebowski Fest, and I'd do it all over again even if it meant losing my voice.

You have to understand: that moment was extremely rare. As far as I know, the five of them haven't all been in one room like that since. It really did feel like a once-in-a-lifetime night, and everyone in that building knew it while it was happening.

Luckily, I not only got to attend the event, but I got their autographs, too. Even back then, I already knew how rare that chance was, so I brought my movie poster to have them sign it. Needless to say, and as you can see for yourself, it was a massive success.

I knew that the cast was made up of good people, so it was easy to ask them to sign the poster. If Jeff Bridges got to work with them and still liked them enough to reunite with them that night, surely they weren't bad. The awesome actor is my barometer for who's actually a good person in Hollywood. So if he's cool with someone, then I consider them cool too.

All of them signed autographs, and they were pretty big names. Apart from Bridges, Moore and Goodman were pretty respected in the industry. While Buscemi was an internet favorite who still gets a lot of love to this day. You'd think such celebrities would have huge egos, but I didn't see any that night.

They were all smiles as they talked about the movie and interacted with fans afterward. It was also so easy to talk to them that it almost felt like they weren’t movie stars at all. I never met them again since, but I'd like to think that they're still just as kind and pleasant.

Apart from the leads, I also got to meet the rest of the cast in various red-carpet events and conventions. Like them, they were all nice people, too. I'm happy to discover that every single person I saw in the film was kind. It makes me love the movie even more.
