I'll never forget the night that the first "Lord of the Rings" premiered. It was a day that I've waited for my entire life. I've been a fan of Tolkien's universe since I was a kid in the 80s. So for Hollywood to come creating 'Middle Earth' in front of our eyes, it was huge to me.
Even bigger was meeting the hobbits themselves. At the time, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan were relative nobodies. They weren't even that known when I met them during the red carpet premiere of the movie. But I didn't care. Simply knowing that they were going to portray my favorite foursome in the literature on the big screen was enough for me to get their autographs.
When I first saw Elijah in person, I knew right then and there that he'll be a great Frodo. And he was! There was something about his big eyes—something that made me feel that he had a lot to give—told me that he fits the character of the Frodo.
I felt the same with Sean Astin too. He seemed like such a good fellow, the kind that Samwise Gamgee was in the novel. The fact that neither of them won any awards for their performances still baffles me!
I saw the rest of the cast then, but those two left bigger marks on my memory than the others. With all due respect to the other actors involved, especially the great Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Christopher Lee, it was Wood and Astin that made the movie!
