Andy and Red Together Again 20 Years Later

Twenty years on, the Academy got Andy and Red back in one room — and one poster caught the night.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite films, and it never fails to make me cry. It's an emotional roller-coaster of a movie, and no matter how many times I've seen it, I always end up in tears by the end. It's a miracle I even held it together at the movie's 20th anniversary event.

The year was 2014, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences set up a 20th anniversary reunion for the movie. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were naturally in attendance, and more of the cast showed up too. Clancy Brown, Mark Rolston, Jude Ciccolella, Gil Bellows, and Frank Darabont all appeared. It was one of the rare times they had gotten together in public since the 1990s.

It was amazing seeing these guys after all these years, but I was particularly teary-eyed seeing Robbins and Freeman together again. Andy and Red are my favorite movie buddies of all time. It's the best friendship I ever watched on screen. And I know it's just a film, but it really warmed my heart seeing how well they still got along off-screen.

They played those characters so well that it was interesting to listen to them talk about it. I just love Freeman's story of how he wasn’t aware that the character in the book was a white Irishman. He said he didn't know which part they wanted him to play and that he was open to taking on any role. Thank God someone had the foresight to cast him as Red!

Robbins, on the other hand, famously shared that the script was the best he ever read. That was saying something considering he was in blockbusters before Shawshank, but I believed him. The book itself was already good, but the movie took it to another level.

Also, can you believe that Robbins met with actual inmates after making the film? Not only that, but he also teaches them acting! He talked about it during the night’s Q&A, sharing that inmates love the film too. The guards? Probably not so much.

Of course, my favorite part was when they talked about how easily they got along. Both Freeman and Robbins shared that they felt that they were gonna get along early on. It's no wonder their friendship seemed so natural on-screen. It was a real bond that has carried on for two decades.

I’m so proud I got them to sign my movie poster that night. I didn’t get all of them, but I did get the best ones: Robbins, Freeman, Brown, Bellows, and Darabont. William Sadler and Bob Gunton weren’t there, but I eventually met them later and got their autographs, too.

Looking back, I realized Hollywood has stopped making movies like The Shawshank Redemption. No film about male friendship has struck this deep in a long while. Most have been comedies or action blockbusters, not serious dramas that truly highlight a strong bond between two men.

Hollywood needs to fix that. They need to produce more emotional dramas like this one instead of the same old superhero flicks. Maybe then we'll see fewer problematic guys in society!
