A Rodeo to Remember with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter

A pop fan, a country fan, one stadium, and the night two siblings finally liked the same record.

No one is doing it like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter today. Even in her 40s, she's still at the top of her game. She's not only releasing new music but also blurring the lines between genres and generations. We millennials have loved her since her Destiny's Child days, but Gen Z and Gen Alpha have come to love her for her newer music.

She even got people who swore they'd never listen to her to put her on repeat. Her Cowboy Carter album and tour turned stadiums into the biggest rodeo on earth, with country diehards and lifelong Beyhive members two-stepping side by side, and Beyoncé at the center of it all as the master showman.

Classic Americana has a way of feeling like it belongs to one kind of fan. Leave it to Beyoncé to make the whole thing feel wide open again — cowboy hats, fringe, and all. Since she's from Texas herself, this imagery is part of her heritage, and she made it feel like an invitation instead of a dress code.

That's what Cowboy Carter was all about for me. It opened up a genre that a lot of people assumed wasn't for them, and it reminded everybody else that country music has always had more roots than they remembered.

I was living proof of it. The Cowboy Carter tour was literally the only time my brother and I have ever gone to a concert together. He's always been the country guy in the family, and I've always been the pop girl, so this was the first time he'd listened to anything Beyoncé has released. And to my surprise, he ended up loving it.

Going to that concert with him will always be one of the best memories we'll share. I don't even think the truce will last. I won't be shocked if he goes right back to his old playlists and I go back to mine. But for one night, we were singing the same words at the top of our lungs, and I'll take it.

So I'm grateful to Beyoncé for giving me that night with my brother. And I got something to remember it by, too.

A friend who works at the stadium offered to try to get my Cowboy Carter poster in front of her team, so I handed it over before the show without getting my hopes up. A few weeks later, it came back to me signed. I never met her, and I know that's how it goes with someone as private as she is, but seeing her signature on it still gives me chills.

Do I wish I got to meet the queen properly? Yes. But I'm still grateful for what I have. Getting her autograph at all is extraordinary, especially with how private she is outside of performing. That poster is as close as I'll probably ever get to her, and I'll always remember the night that came with it.
