A Private Concert with the Rolling Stones

A Chelsea club, a phone locked in a pouch, and the night nobody believes she was there.

Sometimes, you just have to count your lucky stars when something amazing happens. And in 2023, I had the unbelievable luck of meeting Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones in New York City. They held a surprise concert at the club Racket NYC, and I got to be one of the very few regular fans in a room full of celebrities and industry people.

Let me provide some context.

I’ve been a huge Rolling Stones fan since the early 2000s, when my older cousin introduced me to them. However, I grew up lower-middle class, so I could never afford to buy all their CDs, much less go to their concerts. I was happy enough just borrowing from my cousin and friends from school.

Only when I got a job and started living on my own did I spend my extra income making up for lost time. Not only did I buy any Rolling Stones CD I could get my hands on, but I also bought as much merchandise and memorabilia as I could. One of my best purchases is this cool poster of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards performing live.

I also started going to their concerts around the same time, and while I usually went for the cheap seats, I still enjoyed every single one. Their tickets got pricier over time, but I didn't care. Every cent I spent on them was worth it.

Little did I know, however, that I would actually meet them at a free surprise concert. But to be fair, the event was also closed to the public.

Their surprise performance in October 2023 was billed as an invite-only release party for their latest album, Hackney Diamonds. I only got in because I knew someone from the company that organized the event, and she even had to choose between me and another friend for the chance of a lifetime.

Again, I got lucky because the other friend suddenly had to go somewhere else for work, but I promised her I'd get the band's autograph if I got the chance. And I did!

So there I was, dancing to this legendary band I've loved since I was a teenager. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the 14-year-old girl who borrowed her cousin's Rolling Stones CD would one day be enjoying their private concert surrounded by celebrities. And then, for the encore, Lady Gaga walked out to sing Sweet Sounds of Heaven with them. It was wild!

After their performance, my friend, whose job that night had her working behind the scenes, brought me back with her to where the band was greeting guests, and I got them to sign my poster. Jagger and Richards even wrote huge autographs right next to their photos! You can't miss their signatures on the poster.

I also fulfilled my promise to our other friend and had them sign their latest CD, which I then gave to her that Christmas. Even though she missed the whole thing, she still regards it as her favorite Christmas present ever. She still displays it at her apartment, too.

“I probably wouldn't believe me either.”

Sometimes, I can't believe it happened. When I talk to others about the private concert I enjoyed with the Rolling Stones, they never believe me, and it doesn't help that everyone's phones were locked in pouches at the door, so I don't have a single photo. I probably wouldn't believe me either if I didn't have my memories and this autographed poster to remind me it was all real.
