A Nostalgic Nightmare with Freddy

A reluctant trip, a 40th anniversary, and the one horror movie he'll always watch to the end.

I was never one for horror movies, but A Nightmare on Elm Street always stood out to me. I think it might even be one of my favorites, and the only film from the genre that I've watched more than twice. It's a slasher at heart, one of the defining ones of the 80s, and it does it so well.

A bona fide cult classic, many from my generation regard it as a defining movie of the horror genre. Several tropes we normally see in horror flicks today were cemented here, so you can clearly see how it has influenced filmmakers over the years. And yeah, I'll admit it, it's a pretty exciting movie.

Maybe that's why I felt compelled to get the cast's autographs when I saw them at Flashback Weekend in 2024, the year the film turned 40. My brother, a huge fan of the franchise, dragged me to the event because he saw that the iconic Robert Englund, who played Freddy, would be there reuniting with many cast members.

I've heard about this horror convention before, but I never went because, as I've said earlier, I'm not a huge fan of the genre. It's also held in Chicago, a city I'd rather not visit because of some very bad work memories from when I got transferred there early in my career. That's a story for another time.

Because I owed him a favor, however, I let my brother drag me back to that cursed city to a convention I never wanted to check out. You could imagine how miserable I felt as it drew near. I love my brother, but if not for the favor I owed him, I never would've agreed to accompany him.

The only silver lining I looked forward to was meeting Robert Englund, because loath as I was to admit it, I'm a fan. Freddy is my favorite movie monster, and he plays the character so well, I can't see him doing anything else. It's like how Mark Hamill will always be Luke Skywalker to me, no matter what other movies he's starred in.

That day, seeing him surrounded by many of the actresses who starred in the franchise's eight original movies, I realized just how much of a boss he was. Not only did he play opposite a whole generation of scream queens, but he portrayed the character for decades.

I never saw the other movies, but if the franchise stayed popular enough to have had eight movies and one remake, I'm sure the others were good, too. I only watched the first film from 1984, and it remains my favorite and the only horror movie I enjoy watching from beginning to end.

Hence, I only got Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and Amanda Wyss to sign my Nightmare on Elm Street poster that my brother gave me for my birthday in 2017. Langenkamp and Wyss played Nancy and Tina in the first movie, the two girls at the heart of it, and I was happy to meet them that day.

I probably won't ever come back to Flashback Weekend, but I still enjoyed the only time I went. I even got celebrity autographs, which was cool. But as far as going back to that nightmare of a city, I'd rather not, no matter how nostalgic it was.
