A Caddyshack Full of Comedy Legends

Four years, two legends, one rare golf-expo guest — and a Caddyshack poster worth the wait.

I find it unbelievable how Caddyshack is widely forgotten today. It's one of the best comedy movies ever made, complete with a stellar cast of legends. There’s Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight. These are real comedy icons. I know it's become a cult classic, but a film of this magnitude deserves more recognition.

At least I give it the recognition it deserves. I don't just watch it every chance I get, but I also have an autographed poster signed by the cast themselves. It's not all of them. In fact, it's only Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Michael O'Keefe, but it's still not bad! Chase and Murray are undoubtedly legends, while O'Keefe is a great actor who's even been nominated for an Oscar.

Furthermore, chasing them down for autographs was no easy feat. For instance, Michael O'Keefe rarely does these kinds of fan appearances. He's not a hermit or anything like that. He's just not as visible as the more famous two. I still consider it a miracle that I got his autograph at all.

The actor appeared at The Haggin Oaks Golf Expo in 2015 for an exclusive Q&A and autograph-signing session to celebrate the event's 40th anniversary. I went there knowing it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get him to sign my poster. Appearances like that don't come around often.

Looking back, I had a pretty fun time listening to him speak. He was technically the lead in the movie, but because he was cast with such heavy-hitters, he tends to be overlooked. But I didn't. I loved him in the film, which is why I still made an effort to get his autograph that day.

You'd think it’d be easier with Chevy Chase and Bill Murray, but it wasn't. I get it, these guys are legends. It was never going to be easy to get their autographs, no matter how famous they are. Still, since many of the other cast members are already dead, I was determined to have at least these two sign my poster.

It took me four years to finally get to them, and it was lucky they were together that time. Chase and Murray joined Martin Short for a musical performance at The Third Annual Love Rocks NYC Benefit Concert in 2019. It was a notable reunion that made headlines since it was one of the rare times both comedians were seen together.

Chase and Murray had an infamous beef that started back in their SNL days—and funnily enough, it was making Caddyshack together that helped them bury the hatchet. I'm not gonna talk too much about it, only that they've long since made up, and the 2019 concert was one of their rare public appearances together.

Naturally, I had to be there to get their autographs. It was a fun night, and all three of them were hilarious on stage together. After the concert, I finally got to meet them and had them sign my poster as they exited the venue. It wasn't much of an encounter, likely because they were busy and wanted to leave as soon as possible.

I hope this autographed poster introduces or reminds people of Caddyshack, one of the best but underrated comedies from the 80s. Not only is it hilarious, but it stars some of the best comedians and comedic actors from that era.
