I never thought I'd ever be able to say this but here goes—I've met a movie icon! He's one of the biggest names in Hollywood and has even won an Academy Award. What's his name, you ask? Mel Gibson!
That shocked you, didn't it? Well, it surprised me too! You're probably asking how in the world did I get to meet such a famous actor. Well, it's all thanks to my friend. A guy that I grew up with works in Hollywood as part of the crew. He told me that one movie he was working on, "Panama," which stars the Oscar winner, Mel Gibson, needed more hands. I had free time since I just resigned from my job so I volunteered to help him.
It was a bit weird, though, because I thought we'd travel to Panama for the film location. The title does say "Panama" so I thought that's where we'd work. But contrary to the title (and my expectations), the filming location was in Puerto Rico. I guess geographical accuracy wasn't important. Like, I know that this is common in Hollywood but still. If the movie is entitled "Panama," shouldn't you film in the said country?
Anyway, that wasn't really all that important. What was important is that Mel Gibson is still in motherfucking legends! The guy's like, what? 70 or 80 years old? And he's still going strong! I was never a huge fan of his but I always acknowledged that he was a damn good actor. And boy, is he ever! I'd get glimpses of his acting while we all watched him on set and damn! The guy's still got it!
He's a stand-up guy too! When some people from the art department—who are also friends with my friend—gave us the first few copies of the movie poster, we figured we'd get the cast to sign them. We got most of them, like Cole Hauser, Charlie Weber, and more. But we were most nervous about getting Mel Gibson's autograph. I mean, it's Mel Gibson, for crying out loud! You can't just go up to him and ask him to sign any random thing you're holding. You'd look like a fool!
Or would you? Well, we tried our luck and to our surprise, we didn't embarrass ourselves. Though the actor didn't sign the posters when we asked him, he did tell us to wait until the day is over. And so, after a long day's work, we approached Mel Gibson again and this time, he signed all the posters. Every single one! Let me tell you, that was the most amazing moment of my life! Seeing him fulfill our request was nothing short of awesome! Thank God I did this work!
To this day, I still can't believe I met Mel Gibson in the flesh! I'd have to look at his autograph again and again just to remind myself that, yeah, I really did meet him.
