The Singular Keanu Reeves

Duke Caboom's quietest night out, and a Point Break poster that made him giggle.

By an anonymous Hollywood insider

There are some actors that are truly unlike any other. It's not just that other actors can't talk, move, or convey emotion like them. There's just something so unique about these performers that no one can do what they do. Diane Keaton was an example, as was Marlon Brando. And for me, Keanu Reeves is also very singular.

From the Bill & Ted comedies to the Matrix franchise, no other actor can take on very different kinds of movies and lead them to success. You can't even box him as either an action star, a comedic lead, or a dramatic actor. He's all three, yet his performances are always unique, too.

Take his performance in Point Break, for example, where he plays an undercover FBI agent who enters into an unlikely partnership with a bank robber, played by Patrick Swayze. He’s as heroic here as he is in his later John Wick films, but he also packs on a dramatic punch reminiscent of The Lake House.

And do you know the best part? His singularity extends to real life. He's unlike any other Hollywood celebrity, free of ego and pomposity. You've seen the memes of him just sitting on a public bench or on the subway, right? Well, that's exactly how he is in real life: quiet and humble.

How do I know all this? I've had the privilege of meeting Keanu Reeves at the Toy Story 4 premiere at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre in 2019. While the rest of the cast wore colorful outfits and smiled brightly for the cameras, he wore an all-black suit and seemed happy to be in the background.

In group photos, likely because he was also one of the taller cast members, he didn't mind standing in the back. He may have been a new addition to the Toy Story franchise, but he was still, in my opinion, as big a star as Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. Yet he appeared quieter and almost apprehensive about getting as much attention as the two leads.

“His singularity extends to real life.”

Luckily, I only focused my attention on him, and it caught his eye. I was even the first fan he approached on the red carpet. I surprised him by asking him to sign my Point Break poster, a movie largely forgotten when compared to his bigger hits like The Matrix or John Wick. Seeing it made him giggle, and he signed it happily.

I may sound presumptuous here, but that short interaction told me everything I needed to know about the actor off-screen. All the magazine articles, blogs, and comments I've read about him were pretty consistent in painting him as a quiet and reserved man despite his fame. And that night, I witnessed it first-hand.

With so many screen icons retiring or passing away recently, we really have to be grateful that Keanu Reeves is still alive and active. I hope he'll make more movies, specifically beyond the John Wick franchise, that will showcase his singularity again and again.

Some things you watch. This one you keep.
