The Most Memorable Men in Movies

Three anniversaries, thirty years, and a poster finished in a small Ohio town.

When I see what's in theaters today, I thank my lucky stars that I fell in love with movies in the 1990s. I was only a young punk back then, but I already recognized the cinematic greatness I got to enjoy. And none were as riveting or as emotional as The Shawshank Redemption in 1994.

I consider it the perfect movie. It has a compelling story, an awesome cast, awards-worthy performances, and a nice balance between thrilling prison-set conflicts and the emotional dynamics between its characters. I haven't even mentioned the fact that it's an adaptation of a Stephen King novella, and that man can do no wrong!

They don't make movies like that anymore. I've seen a couple of gems in the past few years, but most of what's in theaters today is just rubble. I've yet to see a modern movie that can excite and touch me the way The Shawshank Redemption did in the early 90s.

That's why my devotion to it spans decades. I still watch it now and then, and I'll always be there whenever there's a cast reunion or an anniversary screening. I've made it to three of them so far: the 20th anniversary in 2014, the 25th anniversary in 2019, and the 30th anniversary in 2024.

My favorite was the 20th anniversary event in 2014 because it reunited most of the cast. Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Clancy Brown, David Proval, Mark Rolston, Gil Bellows, Paul McCrane, and Jude Ciccolella were all there. Not to mention director Frank Darabont, too.

I got so nervous meeting all of them for the first time that I only got Robbins', Freeman's, and Darabont's autographs. I would've wanted all the others, too, but it took everything in me to approach those three, and I ran out of nerves and energy to go up to the rest. I was just happy to have seen them in person.

I also went to the 25th anniversary screening in Mansfield, Ohio, where the movie was shot, and I saw Bob Gunton and William Sadler there. I had a great time meeting them and getting their autographs, especially since these were the two who weren't at the event back in 2014.

And then, there was the 30th anniversary screening at the TCM Classic Film Festival in 2024. Since I already got the autographs I wanted, I didn't bring my poster this time. I just relished the moment that so many people still loved the film. And no matter how many times I listen to him, I'll always enjoy Frank Darabont talking about making the movie.

Now that I'm of a certain age, I doubt I'll get to attend another anniversary event for the movie. These bones aren’t what they used to be. I've also enjoyed the film enough and even saw the cast in person. I'll always be grateful I saw the movie at the right time in my life. It made me cherish my friends and enjoy my life even more.
