The Handsome Heroes
of Fury
A work trip to D.C., a Newseum carpet, and a tank crew who were every bit as warm as they looked.
Why don't they make gritty World War II movies like they used to? I feel like it's been a while since I've seen a really good one. Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk in 2017 was one of the last big ones, but my favorite is David Ayer's Fury from 2014. It had one of the most handsome casts I've ever seen.
Led by the forever-charming Brad Pitt, the film also featured Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal, Scott Eastwood, Michael Peña, Jim Parrack, and Jason Isaacs. And of course, it helped to see them in 1940s military uniforms. The hair and the outfits hit the spot for a vintage-loving girly like me.
Fury is by no means a romantic film, but I always get the flutters when I watch it. That's how handsome I think the men are, especially my first movie star crush, Logan Lerman. That man is so handsome that not even dirt and grime can take away his good looks.
He also gave my favorite performance in the film, in my opinion. It was the quietest and most human one in a very loud movie.
That said, I was excited to see them all when I went to the movie's world premiere at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on October 15, 2014. Most of the main cast showed up, and they looked even more handsome in person than they did in the movie trailers.
I went because I was already in D.C. for a work trip, but also because I was excited to see a new World War II movie. And with Logan Lerman starring in it, I got even more excited to see the cast in real life. In fact, I even bought an early copy of the movie poster from someone I knew back home in LA.
I planned to ask them to sign it, but I was nervous about how to go about it. I'd only met a few celebrities before, but they were never the caliber of the actors in this cast. This was gonna be my first time meeting actual A-list stars and asking for their autographs.
Well, as you can see, I did great. It was even ironic that I felt more comfortable asking the A-listers to sign my poster than the—and I hope they forgive me for saying so—less famous cast members.
Brad Pitt, for instance, was so nice that he made me feel at ease when I asked for his autograph. He only needed to flash me his famous smile, and my nerves settled down in an instant. I guess that's his magic, and why he's still one of the biggest movie stars today.
I was happiest to discover that Logan Lerman is an absolute gentleman in real life. He always seemed too nice for Hollywood to me, and I confirmed it when I met him that night. He was such a sweetheart during our interaction that it almost seemed like he was asking me if he could sign my poster. That's how nice he was (and I'm sure still is).
I didn't meet the entire cast, but I'm more than happy with who I saw at the premiere. Followed by an amazing film, I still consider that night one of the best and most memorable.
