The Day I Died Hard and was Born Anew

A friend's mission, a Red 2 carpet, and the Die Hard poster that started a second life.

Ever had a moment when a switch flipped inside you, and you realized that your life will no longer be the same? I did. It was when I met Bruce Willis, and he signed my Die Hard movie poster. I never planned on doing it before, but when it happened, I suddenly found my new life's purpose.

Let me give you some context first. I've loved Die Hard since I first saw it in 2000 at my friend's place, who also loved it. I sincerely think it's the quintessential action movie, complete with a great cast, amazing stunts, and a whole lot of adrenaline. You couldn't have asked for more for the genre.

That friend knew I would like it, so he showed it to me, but I didn't realize just how obsessed he was with it until he showed me his memorabilia. He had copies of the movie poster, and a few of them had Paul Gleason's autograph on them. He then told me that he wanted the rest of the cast to sign them, too.

He said it as if he was giving me a mission. But I just shrugged it off and simply hung the signed poster on my wall since he gave it to me. For a while, I didn't think much of it, but then, in 2013, he called me up and gave me the surprise of my life.

He told me he got tickets to the LA premiere of Red 2 and asked me to tag along to get Bruce Willis' autograph. At first, I looked at him like he was crazy. How could he have even scored those tickets in the first place? And if we're going to a film premiere, why would we ask the star to sign the poster of a totally different movie?

Without answering any of my questions, he went on to force me to take a bath and dress up for the premiere. Before I knew it, I was at the Westwood Village Theatre surrounded by screaming fans and seeing celebrities walk right in front of me.

Finally, there was Bruce Willis, smiling and laughing with his Red 2 castmates as they posed for the cameras. I know this is wild for me to say, but I think I died right then and there. Not literally, of course, but I can't compare the sensation of actually meeting your favorite movie star in real life to anything else.

And when he made his way to us fans and I got to interact with him, it brought me back to life. Yes, I did get his autograph on this Die Hard poster that night, just as my friend wanted, but actually meeting him was the more exhilarating experience.

Bruce Willis looked every bit the rugged hero I admired on screen. He had the same features (obviously), but also the same confidence, swagger, and Alpha energy. I knew the guy standing in front of me was a real man, as real as Hollywood can get.

I eventually got to meet the rest of the living cast to sign the same poster years later. Sadly, though, I never got to meet Alan Rickman before he died in 2016. It's my biggest regret since starting this new life as an autograph hound. I had all the time in the world to do it, but I always missed the chance. And when he passed on, I realized I'll never get his autograph.
