My Final Night with The OG Avengers

An autograph hound's last hurrah, one signature at a time, at the Avengers: Endgame premiere.

I know people are hyped for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday release, but my heart is still with the OG Avengers. RDJ as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, ScarJo as Black Widow. Boy! What a time! Seeing a few of them come back for the latest film has me reminiscing about 2019, when Avengers: Endgame took over the world.

Things were great back then. COVID hadn't hit yet, so everything was normal. And more importantly, the Avengers had all of us in a chokehold. As a huge MCU fan and Kevin Feige supremacist, I was living my best life. Avengers: Infinity War was the franchise's best movie yet, but we all knew that Endgame would blow it out of the water. In fact, I was so excited that I got talked into going to the LA premiere.

My friend who lives in Downtown LA is as big an Avengers fan as I am, but also a huge autograph hound. He'd been to several MCU movie premieres, but he especially wanted me to join him for Endgame. I'm not a big fan of crowds, so I hesitated, even with the fact that this would've been my only chance to see these superheroes in person. After spending about a day weighing the pros and cons, I finally gave in and traveled from San Francisco to LA to attend the premiere.

Despite the hordes of people that night, it was still an awesome experience. Being the veteran autograph hound that he was, my friend scored a great spot in the fan pit, and it gave us front-row access to the stars. The only caveat was that I needed to help him get the movie posters signed, too, but I didn't mind. In fact, it ended up being my favorite part of the night.

One by one, the heroes I marveled at for the past decade walked up to me. They all smiled at me, some shook my hands, and every single one signed my poster. RDJ was the coolest of them all, flashing that cocky smile underneath his sunglasses for every smartphone taking his picture. Hemsworth is a giant in real life. I'm not that short, a solid 5'9" on a good day, but that man towered over me like Goliath did David.

The ladies were all knockouts, too. Johansson looked the hottest, and that dress of hers had me sweating when she signed my poster. Brie Larson, though, surprised me. She looked daintier than the strong Captain Marvel I saw in the film. Maybe it was the suit. And Elizabeth Olsen? Ahh, as bewitching as ever.

Despite practically the entire cast attending the premiere that night, we didn't get all of their autographs. Tom Holland famously missed it, but since my friend was adamant we get everyone's signature, he talked me into going to the Spider-Man: Far From Home premiere a couple months later. That was the same press tour where a young fan famously almost got crushed by a mob of autograph hounds, and it was at that point that I decided that autograph hounding isn’t for me.

After that, my buddy took it upon himself to get the autographs of other cast members who weren't at the LA premiere, like Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, and Michelle Pfeiffer. I've got to hand it to him. He sent me the poster a year later, and their autographs were all there!

I'm happy for newer and younger MCU fans who'll get to have their own fun with Doomsday. The hype has admittedly died down for me in the last couple of years, but I'll still see it. And if any of you are going to the world premiere as I did, here's to hoping you also get awesome memorabilia out of it!
