Meeting the Nobles of Westeros

One last night for the cast at the Emmys, and a poster that caught nearly all of them.

Television was never the same again when Game of Thrones premiered on the small screen. Suddenly, TV series could be as cinematic as movies, with lavish production, thrilling plotlines, and an amazing cast. The show also satisfied people's craving for medieval fantasies that films had lost when superhero movies dominated the box office.

I obsessed over it alongside the rest of the world. No show has intrigued me like that before. I was so captivated by the world of Westeros, the noble houses that governed it, and the political games that always meant life or death. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Some of the best times were watching the show with friends at a bar after work. Everyone, from the staff to the customers, was glued to the TV as the episodes played out. The show created a community among all of us, and that's something that's been lost over time because of online streaming.

The show was a rare gem that I don’t think will ever be replicated, which is why I got as many autographs from the cast as possible while it was still on. It sounds impossible, but it wasn't that complicated. The show was popular enough that the cast constantly appeared at awards shows and conventions.

Wherever they went, I was sure to be there. I never got tired of seeing them in person, especially since they're usually so different from how they look on TV. It was always a trip seeing them in modern clothes after watching them duke it out in medieval costumes.

My most memorable encounter was at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards. Since the series had just ended a couple of months before, that was the last time they appeared at the ceremony as a cast. All the big stars were there, such as Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, and more.

I'd seen them many times before at Comic-Con when they held their panels, but I never got to meet them. There were just too many people who wanted to see them too, and I didn't have the patience to wait in line for their autograph sessions. So I figured, maybe I could go to the Emmy Awards, where they're sure to appear.

They all looked great that night, better than I ever remembered. And when I asked them to sign my Game of Thrones poster, none of them refused. I did miss my chance with Lena Headey, though, which was such a shame. But I can't complain since I still got all the others.

To no one's surprise, the show went out on top. The final season pulled a record-breaking 32 nominations and took home 12 Emmys that year, with Outstanding Drama Series and Peter Dinklage's fourth Supporting Actor win coming on the night itself. The whole cast got a standing ovation when they came out on stage to say goodbye. It was truly astonishing to see, but not shocking, considering it was Game of Thrones.

I'm glad I got to see them in their final glory that night at the Emmys. Their solid victories were further proof that the show was truly legendary. Even their spinoff, House of the Dragon, can't quite live up to their legacy. I like the new show myself, but it's definitely not on the same level as Game of Thrones.
