Meeting the Best Police Force Ever

The summer the Nine-Nine came back from the dead, and the loudest panel one fan ever sat through.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was the best workplace comedy ever on TV, and it's all because of the cast. You really need good actors with great chemistry, and this cast had it in spades. I enjoyed all eight seasons, and I would've loved more if Andre Braugher were still with us.

The show just had great characters all around, and they were lucky to have gotten the perfect actors to portray them. I always thought Andy Samberg was annoying on SNL, but he really came into his own here. The same goes for Joe Lo Truglio, who I remember from Reno 911 in the early 2000s.

Paired with a great slate of female cast members like Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, and Chelsea Peretti, the show maintained a nice balance between its slapstick comedy and more serious, emotional beats. Even Terry Crews, who I always saw as too goofy for his own good, didn't ham it up too much. He was just right as Terry Jeffords, often ending up as the best part of the episode.

And you know the best part? The cast is just as nice and fun in person. I met them at their panel at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, and it was the best experience I ever had at the convention. Mind you, I had been going every year since 2001.

That was mostly because the show was going through a tough transition. It aired on Fox from 2013 to 2018, until the network canceled it. We all thought it was the end of the series, until NBC unexpectedly picked it up for a few more seasons.

You can imagine how relieved and excited we were to see the cast again that day. What we thought would be their final panel at Comic-Con became the ultimate comeback. It was the loudest room I've ever been in at that convention, and my ears sometimes still ring whenever I remember it.

More than how great the show was, we also loved seeing the underdogs come out on top. It did come out of the gate strong, winning two Golden Globes in its first season for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor for Samberg, and that felt like the whole world catching on at once.

But the Emmys never followed. Braugher was nominated four times for playing Captain Holt and went home empty-handed every single one. Can you believe that? Eight seasons of one of the best deadpan performances on television, and the Television Academy never gave him the statue. I get that the competition was tough, but come on.

It always felt like fans loved the show more than the awards shows did, and I hope the cast felt that love when we cheered for them that day. I'm still rooting for them, even though the show ended in 2021. I always love seeing them work on other projects when I spot them.

They were also very nice in person. When I got up to each of them and asked them to sign my Brooklyn Nine-Nine poster, they all asked if I wanted a selfie too.

I only wish I hadn't been nervous and had actually taken photos with them, but unfortunately, my nerves got the best of me. Nevertheless, I still look back on that day very fondly, especially when I look at their autographs on this poster.
