When I was younger, "Dumbo" was among my favorite movies. There was something so heartwarming about a little big-eared elephant who becomes a star when he learns how to fly. And as someone who grew up as the 'weird kid,' that film got me through some tough times. So when I found out that Disney planned to remake it as a live-action film, I didn't know what to feel.Â
On one side, I felt excited that Dumbo's story will return to cinemas again. On another, I didn't want them to butcher my favorite film. But when I found out Tim Burton was directing this, I knew it will still be as good as the first. And so I hauled my behind to Hollywood to attend the premiere. I saw the film's stars there: Colin Ferrel, Eva Green, Michael Keaton, and the great Danny DeVito. They all were nice when I asked for their autographs, as well as to my team. Especially since we asked them to essentially sign the same thing over and over.Â
I was pleasantly surprised by the child stars, Finley Hobbins and Nico Parker. At first, I wasn't sure about giving Dumbo human friends. Part of why the original animated film resonated with a lot of people, myself included, was that Dumbo was a young, innocent elephant that had to navigate the world almost all his own. Giving him human friends kinda lessens that impact, at least on me. However, after having watched the movie, the kids were simply great! Though I and my team were initially hesitant to have had them sign our posters, we realized they were worth it.Â
Not all Disney remakes are worse than the originals. "Dumbo" is one of few that really packs in the same emotional punch as the animated classic.Â
