Jamming with Pearl Jam

A Gen Xer, a twice-postponed tour ticket, and one improbable night of signatures.

Like many Gen Xers, Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Grunge was the it-genre at the time, and while many loved Nirvana too, I leaned more towards this awesome group instead. Their music grips you hard and takes you on a whirlwind with every listen. And they're just as good years later as they were in the early 90s.

How do I know? I went to their concert only a few years ago. That's right! Pearl Jam, one of the kings of 90s grunge, released an album and went on a world tour in the 2020s. Not a lot of bands from their time could boast such longevity, and even now, they can still fill arenas!

What's even crazier is that all four original members are still in the band. Pearl Jam today is still Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament. They've had many drummers come and go over the years, but these four remained solid for decades. Again, only very few music acts from their time can boast such endurance after all these years. Even the most iconic groups changed over time.

The band released their eleventh studio album, Gigaton, in 2020 and planned a world tour to promote it. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to hold off on it until 2022. I had already bought my tickets and was ready to go, but then quarantine happened and, well, you know the rest.

Luckily, our tickets remained valid until the tour finally happened two years later. I was actually quite impressed that they still stuck to the same cities and venues. It really proved, at least to me, that the band is still dedicated to their fans after all these years.

It had been a while since I last saw Pearl Jam live, but they were still as good as ever. You never would've thought the world had just gone through a major global pandemic with the way they jammed that night. From the moment they started up until the very end, they transported us back to the 90s. Yes, they performed songs from their latest album, but even those tracks were reminiscent of their grunge origins.

The concert, as a whole, was epic, but the best moment of the night for me was getting their autographs. I went to the concert with my The Broadcasts 1992 poster, and I was hell-bent on getting it signed. I knew that the band rarely did autograph signings, but I couldn't miss this chance. Who knows when they'll go on tour again?

A friend who worked at the venue tipped me off about where the band's tour bus was parked and when they'd likely head out. I had heard that the band was always nice to venue workers whenever they were on tour, so I posted up along that route and hoped my poster tube and I didn't look too desperate.

An hour after they finished the concert, they went out of their private area and made their way to their tour bus. They greeted and interacted with staff on the way, as I was told, and I used this time to ask them to sign my poster. I wasn't sure how they were gonna react, but still took my shot anyway.

To my surprise, they were pretty chill about it. I was scared they'd be too exhausted and would get annoyed by someone asking for their autographs, but they weren't. They were a bit out of breath, but they didn't give me attitude at all. They just signed my poster, one by one, and made their way to their bus. It all went by so fast that I still couldn't fathom it had happened at all.

To this day, I still find myself looking at my signed Pearl Jam poster as a reminder that it wasn't a dream. It was already far-fetched to have actually met them, but to have gotten their autographs, too? Insane!
