I've always loved Paris and wished to live there someday. I'm still working on it. But you'd think that watching French films would best give me a sense of what it's like to be a Parisienne. Mais non! The one film that really makes me feel and love Paris more is Disney's "Ratatouille."
Surprised? I understand! With French cinema one of the best out there, why would an American-made animated film about a rat who can cook give me a better understanding of Paris? Well, it doesn't per se. The film just gives me a more realistic vibe of what it might really be like to live in the "City of Lights."
More often than not, French films show the two extremities of living in the capital: the dirtiest of the poor or the most glamorous of the rich. "Ratatouille," even with its presence of many rats, gives me a real sense of Parisienne life. At least, I hope it's an accurate sense!
Anyways, I'll never forget when I went to the red carpet premiere of that film. It was the first time I went to a premiere of an actual animated film. And it didn't even feature any of my favorite Hollywood celebs! Sure, I like Patton Oswalt and Brad Garret, but they aren't exactly who I follow on Instagram or read about in the magazines. Yet, with how charming they were when I met them face-to-face, and how kindly they signed my posters, consider me charmed! Furthermore, their performances really elevated the movie!
I may love the film because of its Paris-centric nature, but there's plenty more to love about Disney's "Ratatouille,". For all you animated film-lovers out there, this is a great movie to add to your collection!
