A Jackass Reunion for The Ages

A poster signed for a friend who couldn't be there, by the crew he never stopped watching.

By an anonymous Hollywood insider

I can't believe that out of everything we had in the early 2000s, Jackass stood the test of time. Okay, maybe that's a bit much to say, but it did, however, get its moment a couple of years ago. I was there at the Jackass Forever premiere in 2022, and I couldn't believe it was actually happening.

For those who don't know, Jackass was a crazy reality TV show full of stunts and pranks. Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and Jason “Wee Man” Acuña would do all sorts of outrageous gags to overwhelm the audience. Some were death-defying, some were just plain annoying, but everything they did was crazy.

I wasn't a huge fan, but I remember my buddy watching it religiously back then. I watched a lot of episodes because they'd always put it on when we hung out after school. Each show was crazier than the last, and looking back, it's wild they actually put all of that on TV.

Well, that was MTV. Or at least, a transitory time for MTV when they were slowly shifting their focus from music videos to reality TV. You could say the show was an early symptom of the crazy stuff we now see on YouTube. Jackass walked so YouTubers could sprint now.

“Jackass walked so YouTubers could sprint now.”

To see them all back again in 2022 was crazy, to say the least. But also, part of me found it a bit nostalgic. I may not have been a big fan myself, but it was always part of my teenage years. Seeing them reunite instantly took me back to my best friend's basement, where we would watch it together.

That friend sadly passed away a year before, so to honor him, I figured I'd get the cast's autographs that night. I bought a copy of the Jackass: The Movie poster and had the cast sign it. The movie was one of my friend's favorites in the franchise, and I remember he almost broke his DVD from watching it every week.

Fortunately, most of the cast from the first movie also did Jackass Forever. There were Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Jason “Wee Man” Acuña, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Preston Lacy, and Ehren “Danger Ehren” McGhehey. Bam Margera was the notable absence, and I ended up getting his autograph at another event later on.

I was most excited to see Johnny Knoxville since he was my friend's favorite. I can just imagine him screaming from up high when I met the guy and got his autograph. And I'm sure he would've found Knoxville just as nice as I did. I almost wished he could've possessed me like in Ghost so he could've had that moment for himself.

As for the movie, it was typical Jackass craziness. It still didn't appeal to me, but I commend the guys for doing what they've always done for decades. I've done a lot of things in my life, and I often wish I'd stayed with just one for a long time. So it was inspiring to see these men still be Jackasses and be proud of it after all this time.

Some things you watch. This one you keep.
