A Fateful Meeting with Captain Jack Sparrow
A premiere at the same park as the ride — and the wink that ended one fan entirely.
By an anonymous Hollywood insider
There are times when an actor is so good in a role that it practically defines their career. Think Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, or even Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Then there’s my favorite: Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Because of him, whenever I hear the word “pirate,” I automatically think of Captain Jack Sparrow. He's the ultimate swashbuckling leading man for us millennial kids. Not only did he have the quintessential pirate look, but he also moved and talked the way I've always imagined an 18th-century pirate would.
That's how big of an impact Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl had on me. I'd never even ridden the ride the movie was based on before I saw the film, but after, it became my favorite. And of course, Johnny Depp also became my favorite actor.
Eventually, I moved to Hollywood in the hopes of seeing him and getting his autograph. Not just him though, I don't exactly want to sound like a stalker or anything. My admiration for Johnny Depp started my celebrity obsession, and I moved to Los Angeles to be near this whole world.
I don't even work in the movie industry, but I’ve met countless movie stars over the years. That also includes most of the Pirates of the Caribbean cast, such as Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Zoë Saldaña, Geoffrey Rush, Jonathan Pryce, and more. And in every one of those encounters, I also had them sign my movie poster.
As excited as I was to see them, however, they still paled in comparison to Johnny Depp. He was actually one of the first celebrities I met upon moving to LA. And ironically, it was at a movie premiere at Disneyland.

It was like fate led me to finally meet my favorite actor in the same theme park that featured the ride that inspired the movie where I first saw him. I couldn't have made that up even if I tried, and trust me, I used to write all sorts of Wattpad stories when I was younger.
Anyway, I'm proud to say that I kept it pretty together when I finally saw him in person. It took everything in me not to scream my lungs out as he approached my area in the fan pit. I was also lucky that I secured a spot in front of the crowd, so I really got to see Johnny Depp in all his glory.
“I just about lost it when he winked at me after he signed my poster.”
Our encounter was short but oh so sweet! He was the same as when I'd see him in interviews and awards shows: quietly confident. He had an innate swagger that could make just about anyone swoon, and I just about lost it when he winked at me after he signed my poster.
I kid you not, even if he appeared in front of me in full Captain Jack Sparrow costume, I still would've melted. I even think I would've folded much faster if he did. That's how strong his aura was! I know he's not exactly the most popular actor anymore, but I'm still a huge fan.
Some things you watch. This one you keep.
