Becoming the Usual Suspect to "The Usual Suspects"

Get it? No? Well, it's kinda about the 90s hit, "The Usual Suspect." It starred Benicio Del Torro, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, the fallen Kevin Spacey, and many more. It was such a blockbuster back in the day that I just had to have their autographs. And so I semi-stalked the cast for about five years.

What was worse about it is that I had some help. I have a whole team of autograph-hounds ready to pounce on any celebrity that we happen upon on the street or on the red carpet. And it was actually formed while I tried to get the autographs of the "The Usual Suspects" cast. The first one I got was Stephen Baldwin's. He was on a press junket promoting another movie—I think it was a family movie or something—and I followed him to almost all his interviews. When I saw he was finally free, I asked him for his autographs on my posters (yes plural!) and never disturbed him again.

Benicio del Toro's, on the other hand, I needed some help to get. I had constantly followed him for months, almost too consistently to a fault, that he eventually became suspicious over me. I wanted to tell him that I just wanted his autograph, but he looks so intimidating I couldn't muster up the courage to even get near him. So I got a buddy of mine, who looks bigger than Benicio, to approach him for his autograph and gave it to him.

For the rest of the cast, my other friends got to them. They thought what I did was so quirky (not sure if it's the right term to use) that they wanted to join in on the fun. So the last cast member that I really got to myself was Kevin Spacey. There was a time that he was often in New York, and since I had a sister who lived there, I basically stalked him when we were there.

He was doing a play at the time, so every night I'd go to the stage door, even though I didn't watch the play beforehand, and try to get his autograph. I did that so often that he eventually tried to avoid me, thinking I was some sort of dangerous stalker or something. I really felt I was about to get the cops called on me when I finally told him that I was simply a fan who wanted his autograph. I assured im that once he gave it to me, I'll leave him alone, and so he did. And I did too!

More than just their signatures, having them look at me suspiciously made me understand the movie even more. From then on, I did my autograph-hounding a little less stalker-y and more considerate of personal space.
