The Few Good Men
of a Great Movie
A 1992 courtroom classic, a decade of premieres, and the autographs that proved he could handle the truth.
90s movies were just built different. Or more accurately, made differently. I know it's becoming old to be nostalgic for the 90s by now, but that era truly was a great time, especially for a cinephile. The decade produced some of the best movies I've ever seen, specifically, my favorite: A Few Good Men.
I consider it the epitome—no, the peak—of the legal drama genre. And that cast? Phew! You could say it was the all-stars of the 80s and 90s. We have Tom Cruise at his most dramatic, Demi Moore at her most radiant, and Jack Nicholson showing the youngsters how it's done.
Let's not forget about that awesome supporting cast, too. Apart from the big names I already mentioned, the movie also had Kevin Bacon, Kevin Pollak, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Kiefer Sutherland. Is it any wonder the film earned four nominations at the 65th Academy Awards, including Best Picture? I still can't believe it didn't win any.
Sometimes, I wish I was a grown-up in the 90s. I was only a toddler for most of the decade, and I only watched this fine film when I was in my 20s in the late 2000s. But if I were an adult when it came out, I guarantee that I would've been right there at the premiere, getting the cast's autographs.
You can't just let this cast go. It's one of the best ensembles I've ever seen, and I'm sure, even then, it was already a big deal that these amazing actors starred in the same movie. Nicholson was already a legend, while Cruise, Moore, and Bacon were at the top of their game.
I even chased them down over the years because I didn't want to miss that chance myself. While they're all still with us, I chased after these actors to get their autographs. It's a miracle I got a few of them, let alone any. Many of them are not as active as they used to be.
In terms of luck, I think I had it in spades when I met Jack Nicholson at the premiere of his 2010 film, How Do You Know. As it turned out, that was his last film, and he's rarely seen at events these days.
That same year, I got Kevin Pollak's autograph at the New York premiere of Cop Out. Always an underrated superstar, he was one of the nicest cast members I met then.
I then met the rest of the cast throughout the decade. I met Tom Cruise at the LA premiere of Oblivion in 2013, Kiefer Sutherland at the Forsaken premiere at TIFF in 2014, and Demi Moore at the New York premiere of Rough Night in 2017. They were beautiful and nice, all amazing celebrity encounters.
Casting played a huge part in why 90s movies were so good. A Few Good Men is just one of the many examples of how amazing actors make a great movie, even when it already has a great story.
