Seeing Danny Zuko
and Sandy Olsson in Person

A fan who has seen Grease 200 times, one Beverly Hills reunion, and a very quick, very nervous signing.

Many people might think Grease is corny, but I love it. It's so unapologetically camp, ridiculous, and self-aware that it's always fun to watch. The soundtrack is banger after banger, and it has amazing performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. In fact, I still remember them as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson.

Even though Travolta has had a prolific career working with directors like Quentin Tarantino, he will always be Danny Zuko to me. Similarly, whatever hits the late Olivia Newton-John released over the years, I'll always remember her as Sandy Olsson singing “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” That's the result of watching the film at least 200 times since I first saw it.

Look, I get it, musicals aren't for everybody. Some may find it corny, maybe even annoying, and I get that. But come on! Don't you think Grease is fun? Don't you just want to put it on, eat some junk food, and sing along to the songs? No? Just me? Oh, well!

At the very least, no one can deny that the movie had massive star power. John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Didi Conn, and more. These are absolute icons, and this film turned many of them into household names.

And you know what, I got to meet them in person! I went to most of their reunion events through the years, and I actually saw them in person. Not only that, but I also asked them to sign my movie poster. It was the first time I did anything like that.

A few cast members reunited in 2018 at the 40th anniversary screening hosted by the Academy at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on August 15. Only four of them appeared: Travolta, Newton-John, Didi Conn, and Barry Pearl, along with director Randal Kleiser. I would've loved to see the others, especially Stockard Channing, but seeing Danny and Sandy reunite was more than enough.

I know I already mentioned this, but those two were my favorite part of the movie. They were such an entertaining main couple that seeing them in person stunned me. I almost got lockjaw with how wide my mouth opened when they came on stage.

I think I may have even hyperventilated, too. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I was a mess that night. I even thought about avoiding them because I didn't want them to see me like that. I've always wanted to meet them in person, and when I finally did, I'd be looking crazy? No, thank you!

Luckily, I managed to pull myself together just in time for that brief window when the fans went up to them. I fixed myself up, took a deep breath, and headed to them with my movie poster. I asked them to sign it, and they did. The encounters were so quick and simple that they almost felt anticlimactic.

Olivia Newton-John passed away in 2022, and I'm grateful beyond words that I got to see her next to Travolta that night. Over the next few years, I met more of the cast, including the amazing Stockard Channing. They were just as nice as the main couple, so I think I've gotten most of the main cast on this poster by now.
