One Night with
The Dark Knight
A world premiere at Lincoln Square, a main cast on the black carpet, and the most successful night of one fan's hounding.
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight proves that superhero movies can be Oscar-worthy. We've gotten used to comic book adaptations as typical family fare, and that's all well and good, but they can also have prestige. And with a great director and an excellent cast, the sky's the limit.
I know most people remember it for the late Heath Ledger's incredible, Oscar-winning performance, as they should, but the rest of the cast was stellar, too. Christian Bale remains my favorite Batman because of these movies. So is Michael Caine as the definitive Alfred. Have we also forgotten that Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal were in it, too? What a cast!
The movie had one of the best ensembles of any superhero flick I've ever seen, and I actually got to meet them at the movie's world premiere at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square in New York City on July 14, 2008.
It was one of the first times I went to a movie premiere to try to get celebrities' autographs, and I did pretty well that night. I even got the main cast—apart from Heath Ledger, of course—to sign my Dark Knight movie poster. To this day, I still consider it my most successful hounding ever.
I remember feeling intimidated when I saw Christian Bale in person. I had only ever seen him in American Psycho before he starred as Batman, and he's intense in that. He was nice enough when he signed my poster, but I don't know. He has an intensity about him that I just find... well, intense!
Maggie Gyllenhaal was the more calming presence. She was so lovely and friendly that I almost forgot that she's a world-famous actress. Our interaction was also so refreshing that I almost forgot how tense my encounter with Bale was.
The cast had a lot of big stars, but I was most starstruck by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman. They're so iconic that I was speechless just seeing them walk the red carpet right in front of me. I had to snap out of it multiple times to get their autographs.
The elephant in the room was Heath Ledger's absence, since he had passed away earlier that year. I'm glad the cast celebrated him whenever they talked to the press. He truly gave the performance of a lifetime here, and I was sad he didn't get to see all the glory he earned.
Selfishly, I was also sad that I didn't get his autograph. I always wanted to meet him and get him to sign something, but I never got the chance. Going to The Dark Knight premiere was the closest I got.
Do you know what else is awesome about him? When he won the Oscar for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight, he became the first actor to win an acting Oscar for a comic-book movie performance. And as of this writing, the only other person to do it was Joaquin Phoenix, who won Best Actor for Joker, the same role!
The Academy clearly loves Batman or Batman-adjacent movies. If a director like Nolan or Todd Phillips makes another superhero film, we might see more wins like this.
