Don't you just love it when a comedy is so funny, it just makes you feel good! Like, it's not just that it's making you laugh while you watch it. It's more that the good feeling you get when you've watched it lingers on after! At least, that's what happened to me when I saw "Dolemite Is My Name."
The movie tells the story of Rudy Ray Moore, a filmmaker and comic who played the role of 'Dolemite' in various films throughout the 1970s. Eventually, his own created character grew with a life of its own, leading to a hilarious biopic starring some of the best comedic actors in this day and age. I'm not the least bit surprised that the iconic Eddie Murphy takes the lead role in this. I'm so glad he's finally given the comeback that he so rightfully deserves. And with him are Keegan-Michael Key and Titus Burgess, two of the funniest stars today!
I had the pleasure of meeting these actors and the rest of the cast members of "Dolemite Is My Name" when I went to TIFF in 2019. In fact, not only did I see them, but I also asked for their autographs! And yes, since it was in 2019, this was pre-Covid so events like these were still happening. Nevertheless, it was an awesome night I will never forget.
Who could ever forget getting to meet the one and only Eddie Murphy in the flesh? This man's a legend in every sense of the word! Growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, he dominated the comedy film genre, trotting out box office hits left and right! When I heard that this was going to be his comeback film, I knew I couldn't pass the chance to see him at the premiere and get his autograph. And boy am I glad I did! Seeing him in real life is a highlight of my adult life. He looked so cool, so suave, and every bit the legend that he is! Not to mention he was pretty generous with his autographs too!
He signed practically all of my posters (of the movie), even though I knew it'd hassle him. I almost didn't plan on bringing more than two copies but my friend convinced me to bring more so we could sell some online. I mean, these were signed by some of the best of the best in Hollywood's comedy circle. Why wouldn't they sell for a lot? So it was a good thing I did and luckily, the stars had the energy to sign most of them.
Keegan-Michael Key was also pretty game to give his autograph. I hadn't met a celebrity so gung-ho about signing practically everything in sight! It just goes to show just how much he treasured his fans. He was even the only one, out of all the cast members I met that night, who signed all of my posters. What a cool guy!
Titus Burgess, on the other hand, was also memorable because he was just so darn nice. I mean, Keegan-Michael Key was generous with his autographs, yes, but he wasn't as open as Burgess. This was a man who knew how to connect with people. That, even though we're just fans asking for autographs, he treated us as equals. No wonder he's becoming more and more successful. I'm sure people are recognizing just how cool of a guy he is and they're giving him all sorts of projects. At least, I hope!
"Dolemite Is My Name" was already one of my favorite movies of 2019. But what really makes it such a huge favorite of mine is the fact that the cast are all good people! This movie deserves more recognition than it got!
Please note: Our inventory is limited as we may have only received a few posters in total. Most of our items are obtained from film premieres, studios, and from autographed hounds such as the one in the story above.
