Dazed and Confused
30 Years Later
A box-office flop, an Austin reunion, and a poster that spent the next few years collecting the ones who got away.
Can you believe Dazed and Confused was a flop when it first came out? I know this sounds weird because many people talk about how good it is today, but in 1993, it actually tanked at the box office. It only earned around $8 million on a $6.9 million budget.
I was definitely shocked when I found this out a couple of years ago. Dazed and Confused is treated like a classic nowadays. Some even say it's a must-see for true cinephiles. I certainly liked it from the get-go. I loved how raw, real, and youthful it is. And though it showed an entirely different generation, I still recognized some of them in the kids I grew up with in the 2000s and early 2010s.
What's even weirder is that I only really appreciated that when I went to the movie's special 30th anniversary event at Austin's Paramount Theatre on September 28, 2024. And yes, it was still billed as the 30th anniversary reunion, even though it took place a year after the real anniversary. The event had originally been planned for 2023 and was rescheduled.
Technicalities aside, about fifteen members of the original cast reunited in public for the first time in a long while. Milla Jovovich, Joey Lauren Adams, Anthony Rapp, Christine Harnos, and more were all there, as was Richard Linklater himself. Unfortunately, though, some of the big stars didn't attend, like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Cole Hauser.
Nevertheless, I was still excited to see them all together again in one place. I felt a weird sense of nostalgia, even though I first saw the film over a decade later and was only a toddler when it came out in 1993.
Did it ultimately matter? Of course not. I still had the time of my life hearing them talk about the film, the fun they had making it, and the impact it has had over the years. It was amusing and enlightening, and inspiring to someone like me who used to dream about making films like Dazed and Confused.
What touched me is the affection many of them still had for the movie. As I mentioned earlier, the movie was a flop when it came out, so I would've understood if the cast had completely forgotten all about it. But they didn't. Their being there told me it still meant a lot to them.
I also had fun telling them how much I loved the movie and seeing them so surprised at how young I am. I guess they hadn't realized that film still resonates with the youth, generation after generation. I didn't meet all of them, but I met and got autographs from Milla Jovovich, Anthony Rapp, Joey Lauren Adams, and Richard Linklater.
Since then, I decided to chase down the other cast members who weren't there. It took me a while and a lot of going to movie premieres and conventions, but I eventually got Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Adam Goldberg, Parker Posey, Jason London, Rory Cochrane, Cole Hauser, and more to sign the same poster.
I'm sure today's youth are still dazed and confused, especially with everything going on and social media making it even crazier. To them, I say keep at it and watch this movie to tune everything else out.
