2019 was a good year for horror films. "Midsommar," "It: Chapter Two," "Ready or Not," and even "Parasite" to a certain degree. The past year revitalized love for this classic genre. But if there's one thing I like, it's an underrated film. I love discovering gems that not a lot of people know of.
Now, for 2019, my pick of most underrated horror flick of 2019 is "The Cabin House." I'm sure people didn't give it a second look because it seemed like an overdone horror movie trope. A group of kids goes to an isolated cabin for a fun weekend getaway only to find out there's a killer on the loose. I'm not gonna lie, even I wasn't excited about that overused premise. But when I watched it out of boredom, I found it riveting, exciting, and new.
And the cast was great too. A nice crop of new talent that, I just know, will take Hollywood by storm. Unfortunately, starring in an underrated film might not be the jumpstart they were expecting. But hopefully, as what has happened with earlier films that eventually became cult classics, movies-goers will discover this gem. In the meantime, I like that I'm one of the probably few people who know about them.
I've even met them already. My friend knows the director of the film, Devon Leorop, and he invited me to a party held for the film. The cast and crew were there and I become such a fan of theirs that I asked for their autographs. Having forgotten my notebook, my friend suggested I buy a few movie posters and ask them to sign each one. They all did so and honestly, it felt so good. Seeing these up and comers sign autographs for the first time. I saw their face brighten up. Hopefully, they'll have more of this in their future!
You know, movies like "The Cabin House" need and deserve as much fanfare as the big-studio blockbusters. Spread the love of cinema for the underdogs. You never know, you might just be watching the next Scorcese or DiCaprio!
