We all know about those grand fairytales. Princesses admired and hated for their beauty, heroes on their noble steeds, good conquering evil. No matter how many remakes Disney does nowadays, these stories already imprinted in our minds. So how will filmmakers approach them to make them more interesting? Provide some cool twists.
Through the years, some movies changed our beloved fairytales and gave us a new perspective on some of them. Some are definitely still worth watching to this day.
Snow White and The Huntsman
Forget Prince Charming—who basically did nothing to save Snow White—there’s a new hero in town for “Snow White and The Hunstman”. And if you didn’t get it on the new title alone. The new hero is the Hunstman! From who used to be just the Queen’s stooge in Disney’s animated classic, he becomes the savior of the day in this rendition. Played by the suave Chris Hemsworth, who’s proven himself to be a great heroic lead, this version sees the beloved princess become more powerful, braver, and stronger. It's a modern take on a traditional fairytale but it's as entertaining nonetheless.
Oz: The Great and Powerful
Everyone knows the story of "The Wizard of Oz" but do you truly know how that world came to be? How a mortal man was able to deceive even the most powerful witches in Oz? Why the Wicked Witch of the West was so wicked? Well, "Oz: The Great and the Powerful" provides the origin story. This film establishes how the "Wizard" betrays a sweet young with to become the frightful green-skinned monster every kid abhors. It also tells of Glinda the Good Witch's origins, on why she's the only good witch in Oz. And before Dorothy's house smushes her, we also get to learn more about the Wicked Witch of the East here too.
Christopher Robin
Everyone knows who Christopher Robins is. He's that adorable little boy who made friends with a plump bear, a scared little piglet, a hyper tiger, and a gentle rabbit. But in "Christopher Robin," this young little lad has grown up into a hard-working husband and father. He no longer remembers Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Rabbit, that is until they go looking for him in the streets of London. What used to be a warm tale of cuddle animals trotting about in the Hundred Acre Wood became a thrilling adventure of living stuffed animals navigating one of the busiest cities in the world. Now that's a twist!
Shrek
Take everything you knew about fairy tales and thrown them all out the window. This time, it's the ogre who's the hero. That's right, "Shrek" turned all your favorite fairytales and turned them upside-down and inside out. And with such a host of wacky and lovable characters, you wouldn't mind. The princess transforms from a beautiful lady to a big ogre, the sidekick is a loud-mouthed donkey who falls in love with the dragon that imprisoned the princess, and the ogre gets his happy ending. But what about the Prince? let's just say he gets what he deserves.
