I know people always say this, and usually, they're blanket statements, but I realized this to be true when I met Neil Young. After meeting him in person at a meet-and-greet, I really can't see anyone who's like him, or can actually get near him, from the rock stars of today.
It was in Los Angeles where he held his meet-and-greet. It was to celebrate a special anniversary of "After the Gold Rush," one of his best works and a personal favorite of mine. I had brought along a few posters of the iconic album cover for him to sign, so I was doubly excited and determined to meet him that day. However, so were the other thousands of people who went and were similarly big fans of the music icon.
When he finally popped up on-stage, it was as if the rain had finally fallen on dry land. The applause he got was like no other, and I wasn't the least bit surprised. But when he started talking about his career, on how he made "After the Gold Rush," and the differences between the industry then and now, my respect for him grew. With his amazing talent and the sacrificed he made to be where he is now, I simply can't imagine today's stars going through the same thing.
After waiting for about an hour or so, I was finally up close with the legend. I showed him my posters and he was astonished that I was able to get as many as I did. It was only a few, but even then, his eyes widened by the sigh of them. He then signed each and everyone without stopping. He never once thought that one would be enough for me. He still signed all of them and for that, my respect grew even more!
For all you up-and-coming rock stars out there, I advise that you take a look at Neil Young. Not to copy him or anything like that, but to see just how an artist should be if he/she wants to succeed in the industry with integrity, heart, and an indelible legacy!
