To this day, I'll never forget my dad's story on meeting a legend. This guy wasn't just good at music, he was an icon. So much so that there's even been a movie about him. And the guy who played him? He won an Academy Award for it! I'm talking about Freddie Mercury!
Yep, my dad met the one and only, Freddie Mercury. When he was my age, he worked for a trendy magazine that mostly centered on music and the business of it. He was assigned to interview Mercury right before Queen went on tour. My dad described to me that, upon seeing him for the first time, he already knew that the guy was special. Not only because of the music he has made, but also with the air about him when one sees him in person. He told me that you'd feel a strange combination of intimidation and reverence when faced with him.
But he also noted that, once the interview began, it was like he was a different person from who he met just a few minutes ago. He was so passionate about music. As he explained what his process was in creating new songs, he intricately detailed how he exercised his creativity. How he enjoyed the ideas the flourished through his head. It was apparent inspiring, but also, extremely complex.
My dad told me that as the interview went on, he found out more and more about the real Freddie Mercury. The courage inside the man, but also the vulnerability behind the superstar. At times, the legend even asked if my dad could take some of the things he inadvertently blurted out off the record. My father complied.
And when they were through, his manager at the time thanked my dad for agreeing to keep the most personal things he shared a secret. And as a form of more gratitude, he gifted him with a stack of signed Queen posters. Well, it said Queen, but they only featured Freddie Mercury himself, at his best: on-stage.
Now, I've become a journalist as well to follow in my dad's footsteps. Here's to hoping I'll meet a few legends myself in my career!
