If there's something I like better than soccer, it's music. In fact, even now, I'm still not sure which path I'd want to take: soccer or artist? I'm currently working in a media company focused on music, but I also still play a lot of soccer from time to time.
And I always love it when these two worlds collide. Fortunately for me, that happens quite a lot. Even in the World Cup, arguably the biggest event in the game, music is a huge part of it. I will never forget that back in 2010, I was able to meet the legend that sang one of the theme songs of that year's championship. The one and only, Shakira!
Who could forget her extremely catchy track that she sang? At times, I even still catch myself singing "Waka Waka" even after all this time! But that year, I went all the way to South Africa with a bunch of friends to watch the games. Little did they know, I wanted to meet Shakira as well. She was on fire performing her famous song in front of millions of people. And seeing my fellow soccer fans celebrate her music got me all tingly inside.
After the opening ceremony, I tried to meet her but security was too tight. I had figured she'd meet with fans, but unfortunately for me, I wasn't one of the lucky ones that day. It was only a couple of days later, however, in the middle of the World Cup games, that I suddenly met her on the street. She still had security around her, of course, but she was free enough to meet and chat with fans. As soon as I can, I laid out my posters of her "Oral Fixation Vol 2" album and she signed each one.
To this day, I still think of that World Cup edition. Not only was it one of the best, competition-wise, but it really made me love both soccer and music a whole lot more! And that's what it's all about!
