Scariest Possession Films of All Time

Possession is the scariest sub-category in the horror movie genre. From its biblical origins to its wildly mysterious nature, you just can't help but scream like a little b**ch when you watch one. You might be the toughest guy in the room, but one scene from any possession film will have you sh**ting in your pants in no time. But some are scarier than others, be it with their historical contexts or suspenseful scenes. Here are a few of them to watch if you're brave enough!

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

What's scarier than a possession film? One that's based on a true story. "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" was actually based on the real-life exorcism of Anneliese Michel, a young woman who dies a year after her exorcism. In this unique retelling, the priest who took charge of the exorcism, Tom Wilkinson's 'Father Moore' tried to defend his action in court following the death of the titular character. The flashbacks he provides are some of the most chilling scenes in the movie, especially when the demons reveal who they are. I guarantee anyone who watched this movie had chills on their spines all throughout the film!

The Amityville Horror

Another horrific film based on a true story is The Amityville Horror, a 2005 remake of the 1974 classic of the same name. Here, Ryan Reynolds's George Lutz become possessed to kill his wife and step-children, even scaring away the neighborhood priest who attempted to bless the house. With various apparitions and lots of blood everywhere, the film is one of the most visual in all of the Possession horror movie genre. Not even a sweaty shirtless Ryan Reynolds could keep any audience member glued to their seats as the horror unfolds. Everything is just too riveting!

The Shining

"Here's Johnny!" (sorry, I had to do it!). There's a reason why this film is as iconic as it is, and it's not just because of Jack Nicholson's famous line. In a hotel with creepy twins playing about in the halls, even I would go crazy. But the way Nicholson acted his possession was sinister at its best. He totally convinced you that he wasn't just pretending. The craziness in his eyes, especially in that iconic scene, was one of the most chilling parts in the entire movie. You felt as desperate as Shelley Duvall's 'Wendy' to run away from him!

The Skeleton Key

While "The Skeleton Key" isn't based on a true story, it does take its themes from historical concepts. This time, it's the hoodoo magic in the Southern stars of the country. Kate Hudson's 'Caroline' tries to uncover the mysteries of an old home in Louisiana. And in her investigating, not only does she get possessed, but er spirit dies while her body lives on. It's a unique approach to the whole subgenre that not only took on specific cultures but also provided a harrowing end. The worst horror movies are always the ones that don't end well!
