As an American living in Britain, I've since realized just how influential Shakespeare really was. Growing up in the States, I only thought of him as the author of "Romeo & Juliet." A story of which, I and my school mates had to act out in a play (I was Thibault!).
But here, not only theater kids from school but also serious actors would kill to play Romeo and Juliet. Or just about any old Shakespearean role for that matter. But weirdly enough, those two roles did end up on two fine British actors: James McAvoy and Emily Blunt. But now, however, as you might think.
Sure, James McAvoy playing Romeo and Emily Blunt as Juliet would lead people to think that these actors are playing the roles of their lifetimes. But not necessarily. As McAvoy actually played 'Gnomeo' in the animated film, "Gnomeo and Juliet." Yes, they turned this classic love story into a cartoon film about gnomes. Still, the movie is quite entertaining! And just because they're gnomes, it didn't stop a few legends from getting into the fun.
Who are these legends, you ask? Oh, just Sir Michael Caine and Dame Maggie Smith! Alfie and Professor McGonagall themselves! With all due respect to McAvoy and Blunt, these were the stars I was most excited to see during the movie's premiere here in London. Just to see these legends up close was phenomenal! Though Dame Maggie Smith was more reserved, she still signed my posters. As for Sir Michael Caine, well, he's still rocking that 'Alfie' swag after all these years!
Who knew an animated film about dueling gnome families would give me the opportunity to meet these screen icons? The autograph-hounding business is funny that way, I suppose!
